Before you choose

Is paintless dent repair better than a body shop for hail damage?

For hail dents where the paint is unbroken and the back of the panel can be reached, paintless dent repair is usually the better choice because it keeps the factory paint. A body shop is the right tool where hail cracked the paint, tore the metal or landed where nothing can reach behind it.

Two methods

What is the difference between paintless dent repair and a body shop?

Hail damage has a pattern of its own. Hail falls close to vertical, so it collects on the flat panels: hood, roof and trunk lid. A storm leaves dozens or hundreds of small, round impacts spread across those panels. That pattern is the reason paintless dent repair exists, and it is also where its limits come from.

Paintless dent repair works the metal, not the paint. A technician reaches the back of the panel and works the stretched metal down in small increments until the surface returns to where it was. Nothing on the outside is sanded, filled or resprayed. There is a fuller explanation on our paintless dent repair page.

Conventional body work repairs the surface from the front. The panel is filled, sanded, primed and sprayed, and the original finish on that panel is gone. A new color mix then has to be blended into the neighboring panels so the difference does not show.

So the honest answer is not always one or the other. It is a panel by panel decision, and some cars need both.

When PDR fits

When is paintless dent repair the better choice for hail?

Paintless repair usually works when:

  • the dents are round hail dents on a hood, roof or trunk lid, and the paint is unbroken;
  • the technician can reach the dent from behind the panel;
  • the metal was stretched but not torn;
  • there are dozens or hundreds of small impacts.

That is the kind of damage a hailstorm actually leaves. When those conditions hold, there is nothing to match and no repainted panel for anyone to find later.

When it does not

When does hail damage need a body shop?

Conventional work is the right tool when:

  • the paint is cracked, chipped or flaking at the impact;
  • the dent sits on a sharp body line or a double-skinned edge with no access behind it;
  • the metal is torn.

Glass, trim, mirrors and lights are a separate question. They are replaced, not worked. A cracked windshield or a damaged sunroof is a different trade and a different part of the estimate, and it should be flagged at the inspection so it does not turn up as a surprise later.

Paintless repair is not a universal answer, and a shop that tells you it is has not looked at your car yet.

Factory paint

Does paintless dent repair keep the factory paint?

Yes, on every panel where it is used. That is the whole point of the method: the paint that leaves with the car is the paint the factory put on it.

That matters most when you sell or trade the car. Paint depth and texture are measurable, and a dealer appraiser looks for exactly that on a repainted panel. Nobody can honestly put a number on what an untouched factory finish is worth on your car, because that moves with the model, the mileage and the market at the time you sell. What you can ask for is a written record of what was done to each panel.

What about a vehicle history report? The record comes from the claim, not from the repair method. Only your insurer can tell you what it reports, so ask them directly.

Both at once

Can one car need both paintless repair and a body shop?

Yes. A roof and hood with unbroken paint can come out with paintless repair while a cracked windshield is replaced and a panel with broken paint goes to conventional work.

A good estimate names the method for each panel and says why. Where conventional work or refinishing is required, you should hear it before any work begins, not after.

Who decides

Who decides whether my car gets paintless repair or a body shop?

What is on each panel decides it, and that can only be seen in person, under a light. Hail damage shows up under a low, raking light and almost disappears under an overcast sky, so an answer given from a phone photo is a guess. That is why the inspection described on our hail damage repair page happens at the car.

The insurance side is separate. You open the claim, because only the policyholder can, and your insurer makes the coverage decisions under your policy. A repair shop does not decide coverage, and neither do we. The full order of events is on the hail claim process page.

Compare them

How do I compare a PDR shop and a body shop after hail?

Ask each one the same four questions:

  1. Did you look at the car in person, under a light, or only at photos?
  2. Which panels get paintless repair, which get conventional work, and why?
  3. Will any panel be repainted, and which ones?
  4. Is there a warranty, who honors it, and can I read the written terms before I authorize anything?

Here are our answers. The inspection is free and happens at your car, because there is no walk-in location. When a panel qualifies, the factory paint stays on. Every completed repair carries a lifetime warranty, honored by Cesar's team, and the written terms that come with the repair are what govern. More questions worth asking are in how to choose a hail repair company.

Short answers

PDR and body shop questions

Does paintless dent repair work on large hail dents?

Size alone does not decide it. What decides it is whether the paint broke, whether the metal tore and whether the back of the panel can be reached. That is checked panel by panel, in person.

Can paintless dent repair fix hail damage on the roof?

Usually, when the paint is unbroken and the technician can reach behind the panel. The roof is one of the flat panels hail hits first, and round dents there are the kind that usually comes out.

Will paintless dent repair show up on a vehicle history report?

The claim creates the record, not the repair method. Ask your insurer what it reports.

Is there a warranty on paintless dent repair?

For our work, yes: every completed Cranio Hail repair carries a lifetime warranty, honored by Cesar's team. The written terms that come with the repair govern what it covers.
